How to generate an Excel spreadsheet of procedure codes and the revenue they account for
Last updated: July 8, 2025 by Jason Shah
Why you would want to do this
There are a few reasons you may want to generate an Excel spreadsheet of procedure codes and the revenue they account for:
- You want to identify the top 10 or 20 procedures that are most profitable, and the top 10 or 20 procedures that are least profitable.
- You are trying to compare a practice quarter-over-quarter or year-over-year, to see how your procedure mix has changed over time. This can help you identify which procedures are most profitable, and which procedures are less important to your practice.
- You are trying to compare between providers, to understand how to target coaching for providers who might have areas of improvement.
- You want to compare between practices, to see what procedures matter to the patients at each practice.
- You are evaluating purchasing a practice and want to compare its procedure mix to your own.
How to generate the list
First, you need to generate the Procedure Summary report, for the time period and filters in which you are interested.
However, like almost all Dentrix reports, it's not possible to export the report into a file that you can work with in Excel or Google Sheets. That's where Dentrix Report Converter can help.
Here's how to do it:
Open Dentrix and log in with a user with sufficient permissions to generate reports.
Open the Office Manager.
Click on Reports menu > Management > Practice Analysis Report...

Choose the options in the dialog. The most important ones are:
- Date Range
- Under Select Summary Reports, ensure ...by Category is unchecked. If this is checked, the output report will summarize production by category, instead of giving you the per-procedure code revenue

Click on Print to generate the report and be taken to the Print Preview screen.
Tap on File > Print.
Look for a printer that says something like "Print to PDF", and choose that one. That printer will allow you to "print" the report to a PDF file on your computer.
Click on OK and save the PDF to your computer.
Log into your Dentrix Report Converter Dashboard.
Drag the file into the upload area
Tap "Upload and Convert"
Within seconds, you will receive a link to download your report in Excel. You can export this to CSV or upload it to Google Sheets.

How to compare revenue by procedure code between two time periods, providers, or locations in Dentrix
Once you have the list of procedure codes and the revenue they account for, you can use Dentrix Report Converter to create a side-by-side comparison of 2 Procedure Code Summary reports.
